Tour Overview

Lake Chala is a volcanic crater lake tucked along the Tanzania–Kenya border, about 51 km from Moshi. Fed by underground streams from Mount Kilimanjaro, its waters shift between deep blue and emerald green depending on the light. The lake, about 3 km wide and 81 meters deep, is surrounded by towering crater walls and lush ecosystems.

This full-day eco-adventure is ideal for nature lovers, photographers, and explorers. From hiking and birdwatching to enjoying a peaceful lakeside lunch, Lake Chala offers a rare blend of natural beauty and cultural encounters.

Itinerary

08:00 AM – Hotel Pickup in Moshi – Meet your guide and begin your scenic drive.

Drive to Lake Chala – Pass local villages and enjoy clear views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Arrival at Lake Chala Camp – Orientation and tour briefing.

Guided Hike & Descent – Learn about the geology, flora, and fauna of the crater ecosystem.

Birdwatching & Wildlife Spotting – Look for unique species along the trails.

Meeting & Pickup

  • Pickup Time: 08:00 AM from your hotel in Moshi. Please be ready 10 minutes early.

  • Alternate Meeting Point: Eco Wonders office or Moshi town center (by prior arrangement).

  • Total Length: Approx. 8–9 hours, including travel.

  • Time at Lake Chala: 3–4 hours of hiking, wildlife spotting, photography, and lunch.

  • Hiking Time: 1–2 hours each way for descent/ascent, depending on group pace and trail conditions.


Difficulty & Fitness

  • Level: Moderate. Trails include steep sections, uneven steps, and loose rock. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended.

  • Not Suitable For: Guests with serious mobility challenges, infants, or those in late pregnancy. (Contact us for accessibility advice.)
